OASES recieves laboratory space and an ROV

Palm Bay, FL, July 12, 2002 - OOASES, Inc., is pleased to announce that Brevard Community College (BCC) has provided space to our organization at the college's Palm Bay campus. The space will allow OASES to set up laboratories for all three of its divisions: Aquaculture, Environmental, and R&D. OASES is currently working with the college to provide student internships and mentoring relationships, as well as to pursue joint grant opportunities.

The Aquaculture laboratory will house various multi-level gradient aquarium systems, invertebrate culture raceways, refugiums, and traditional aquarium systems. The primary focus will be on testing new filtration methodologies, exploring propagation techniques on different species of corals, and testing new technologies developed by the R&D division. Locally-collected Atlantic species will be the primary candidates for initially populating the aquarium systems. Eventually, Caribbean species will be added to augment diversity.

The Environmental hydroponics laboratory will utilize state of the art equipment that has been donated by local law enforcement agencies. Some of the future additions to the hydroponics systems will include real-time parametric monitoring, and advanced lighting systems. This lab will support propagation and rapid growth of various plant and trees species that are in decline locally (Brevard County).

The R&D laboratory occupies approximately 1500 square feet and is the largest of the three labs. It contains multiple disciplines (electronic, mechanical, computing, material science, modeling, etc.) and a variety of equipment used to support ongoing projects. Presently, the R&D division is preparing to submit multiple provisional patents on some of its most recent innovations. The division has also graciously accepted an Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution that is in non-working order. The R&D division will be restoring the ROV and implementing a new control system, cameras, and testing out a prototype lighting system (designed internally).

While this interim space is key to OASES' ability to perform research and establish best practices for both coral and plant/tree propagation in the short-term, it is also a good fit for BCC. OASES provides real-life experience to students and a variety of mentors with highly technical backgrounds to enhance the college's ever-expanding curriculum. Ultimately, this collaborative effort benefits the entire local community.
